RIDDING FAMILIAR AND FAMILIAL SPIRITS ENDS WARS

Posted: May 7, 2011 in Uncategorized

God has been leading me to look deeper into what divides people.  He wants me to understand the core reasons behind adversities at all levels.  As I have prayed and sought His face about this, I began to think of the account of Ishmael and Isaac in the book of Genesis.

For instance, both Isaac and Ishmael were blessed by Abraham their father.  Each was given specific blessings as is seen in this account:

Genesis 17:18-20 (AMP)And [he] said to God, Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!
But God said, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son indeed, and you shall call his name Isaac [laughter]; and I will establish My covenant or solemn pledge with him for an everlasting covenant and with his posterity after him.  And as for Ishmael, I have heard and heeded you: behold, I will bless him and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly; He will be the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. [Fulfilled in Gen. 25:12-18.]”

Personally, I continually pray for Israel, Jerusalem and the Jewish people.  This has been my practice for most of my life.  We encourage all who read our writings to do the same thing.  In obedience to the Lord, I am praying for the descendents of Isaac.

But I have never made it a point to also pray for the descendents of Ishmael.  Not sure why except that I have always heard that Ishmael and all his descendents are cursed by God.  So, I did not want to go against God.  I am finding the charge that Ishmael was cursed by God and not blessed by God is simply not true.

The Holy Spirit is calling me to study out the divisions between Isaac and Ishmael.  He is leading me to determine why they happened.  Perhaps the “Genesis” of familiar and familial spirits (more on this below) that still roam the earth today seeking to steal, kill and destroy find their origins in part back with Ishmael and Isaac.

John 10:10 (NASB)  “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Surely, I now pray earnestly and regularly for the descendents of Ishmael as well.  The Lord has strongly directed me to do so.  Think of the difference this could make in the present fomenting controversies, wars and terrorism.

In some research recently, I ran across this piece from Dale Edwin who has moved to the Middle East in pursuit on understanding the division between the descendents of Abraham Ishmael and Isaac.  I have quoted the source so that you can go study this out for yourself if you like.  It is a challenging read and I hope you enjoy it.

Tracing his story starting in Genesis 16 it’s a quick read through to 25 where the trail cools. His (Ishmael) story and that of his descendants are of many firsts in the Bible.

The highlights are these:

  1. The mysterious Angel of the Lord (possibly Christ himself), first appeared to Hagar while she was pregnant with Ishmael… Hagar knew God by some of the first names he is noted for in the Bible as ‘The God who Sees’ and ‘The God who Hears’
  2. Ishmael was blessed by God, and the first to receive a blessing of lineage and offspring.
  3. Ishmael was the first born son of Abram, and God honored Abram’s prayer ‘Oh that Ishmael might live before you!’
  4. In IS 42 it is prophesied that the tribes of Kedar and Sheba will worship God with acceptance. It is rare for tribes to be pointed out in this manner… Kedar is the ancestor of the Muslim prophet Mohammad.
  5. First to worship – It has been discussed in other places that descendants of Ishmael were likely the first to come and give gifts from the East in Matthew 1 prepared forehand by Daniel’s teaching hundreds of years previous as the chief of the Wise men of the East.
  6. First to hear – It may be that God has some kind of priority for Ishmael’s line for Paul spent his first 3 years in ministry in Arabia (see Gal 1:17), the city of the Nabateans, who were descendants of Ishmael.

It is my contention that given the biblical firsts and all the significant events surrounding Ishmael, shouldn’t we as Christians be more attentive to his descendants today? Instead we believe myths like God cursed Ishmael, or that all the trouble in the Middle East today is because of Ishmael… this is not found in the Bible. The NIV translates Gen 16 wrongly when it says ‘he shall live in hostility towards his brothers’… the original language is talking about geography (to the East). Other versions indicate ‘over against’ (ESV) which is better.

The hatred of Muslims today, especially Arabs has got to stop if we are to get in line with the Bible and place of Ishmael in God’s plan. God loves all nations, especially the descendants of Abraham, Isaac AND Ishmael.

SOME DEFINITIONS OF TERMS  (Far from complete or comprehensive)

FAMILIAR SPIRITS:  (Feel free to help clarify or expand, etc.)

These are spirits (demons) masquerading as part of your familiar surroundings and relationships.  Some may be so common in your experience that you really do not think of them as attacking, opposing and seeking to destroy.  But they are.  In my historical family, a familiar spirit would be a spirit of “rejection.”  It is so common that it just seems like “part of the family” and therefore not a force to be resisted, confronted and eventually cast out.  This may require more people of prayer than just you.  It could require knowledge and cooperation of your entire family and all others involved praying.  There is an old foundational book “Pigs in the Parlor” that might be good to read and re-read a few times.  You have the power over these spirits in Jesus’ name.  Your authority is Jesus himself.  You pray with Jesus by your side.  Victory is guaranteed.  He never loses a battle.

FAMILIAL SPIRITS:  (Feel free to help clarify or expand, etc.)

Again, in this case the “familial” is just part of the “family” in which you and your relatives live.  Everyone knows “this is just the way it is.”  We have mental illness, alcoholism, etc. and we perhaps acknowledge it but it seems to be just the way our family is and has always been.  In the Philippines with our work with poorest of the poor children, the familial spirits are those of the parents and grandparents who are abjectly poor and always have been.  It is just expected by the parents and grandparents that the children will all be the same and repeat the endemic poverty of their heritage.  The “familial spirits” see to it that this happens.  It is a battle in prayer and provision to bring about change because of these familial spirits.  Some of the brightest people ever were born to idiots or mentally deficient parents.  But some descendents decide to break the mold and get out from under that controlling familial spirit of mental deficiencies.

FORGIVENESS:  (Feel free to help clarify or expand, etc.)

Being compared to the layers of an union, forgiveness usually comes one layer at a time until the whole onion is gone and gone forever.  Forgiven hurts and wounds are alive in the memory but are no longer energized once forgiveness is complete.  Of all subjects in the Scriptures, forgiveness is almost a constant teaching and directive from our Lord.  He places the highest priority on it saying if we do not forgive other, He will not forgive us.

SINS OF OUR FATHERS:  (Feel free to help clarify or expand, etc.)

Numbers 14:18 (NLT) “‘The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations.’”  This is a serious matter.  The father(s) must repent.  The descendents must forgive and repent as well at every level no matter how painful or how long it takes.  Almost everything demonic emanates from unforgiveness.

Blessings and prayers, Ras

    Greetings!

I rarely see comments to your posts, I feel lead today to reply!

This subject is priority in the Body of Christ. Everywhere I turn these subjects are being discussed! I personally am reaping fruit from experiencing forgiveness at various levels, just like the onion you describe. Forgiveness and getting back to the basics of Scripture, forgiving, being forgiven and getting the “pigs out of the parlor” seems to be the avenue Holy Spirit is seeking to work in and within these days!

I appreciate you and the Truth you convey!! Go God!!!

Usually I feel praying for the nations like too big goal for me (probably because often my own life seems to be filled with every kind of problems), but the idea to focus prayers like this gave me compassion for arabs and easier to remember them in my prayers. I found the definitions of the terms useful, because I have heard about “familiar/familial” spirits only few times before. I am also praying freedom to myself if there is/has been this spiritual influence in my own life.

    Blessings,

I believe this is a topic that is definitely on God’s heart. The morning that bin Laden was killed, God woke me up reminding me of the bad report card my granddaughter had received. Her name is Jasmine, which means “Messenger of Love.” I sensed God was showing me that we had failed and received bad grades in the area of being Messengers of Love.

I’m not sure how well I will relate this. Please bear with me.

This past week, I went through an intense time of prayer for my own family and our ugly past. As I cried out to God about my own family, God reminded me that it was the National Day of Prayer. He showed me that this wasn’t just about me and my family but about the families in America. I sensed that He showed me that it had to hit me close to home so I would pray.

Our nation is filled with step families that are going through so many problems and have so much sin from their past. When I coordinated the Cry Out America prayer, there were signs up that said “Home Hazardous Waste.” There was a huge banner that said “Cry Out America.” This week as I cried out to God for my own family, I saw a flyer for “Home Hazardous Waste.” I saw “Home Hazardous Waste” at both national days of prayer.

As I looked at my own family’s ugly, sinful past, God showed me that there are two options. Jesus is at the right hand of the Father pleading our case for us – telling God that we are not guilty because of the blood He shed. Satan is accusing us. Who will we agree with? (I believe that this is why forgiveness is key. When we forgive, we are in agreement with Jesus.)

God showed me that there is sewage overflow in our families. He told me to offer to start bible studies based on the “least common denominator of forgiveness.” Another time when I was in a neighborhood, I asked God what to teach. He pounded into my heart for a day and a half, “teaching them to obey all I have commanded you.” I thought, What a novel idea – to teach what Jesus said to teach.

As I looked at my family, there seemed to be no hope, but then God reminded me that we have a new bloodline – a royal bloodline – the blood of Jesus. He gave me Eph. 3:14-15 “For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,”

The Israelites were to take a lamb for each family. As we partake of communion, we are partaking of the Lamb of God who has taken away the sin of the world. We are partaking of it with our family who has God as our Father. We receive a blood transfusion. The blood of Jesus doesn’t have sin in it. This is why Jesus said that we must be born again. We must be of the bloodline of Jesus. Where sin abounds, grace abounds more. No matter how much sin a family has in it, the blood of Jesus, the grace of God, is greater.

I have felt the pain of being in a step family and having to choose between children. It is so painful. All I want is the best for all of my children and for my children to love and forgive each other. I believe this is God’s heart for His children no matter who they are. Even when I see my children sin and do wrong things, I still love them. I know that it is because of my mistakes. But then I can look back at generations and see that the reason that I made mistakes was because of my parents and them because of their parents. So where does it stop? We have to draw a blood line and say NO MORE. That is what Jesus did.

“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace (Eph. 2:14-15)

May God reveal to the broken families in our nation and other nations that there is hope. The hope is in Jesus Christ where we can be born again and have a new family that is without sin.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son….

We are either in agreement with satan who is accusing us and pointing out all of our faults, or we are in agreement with Jesus who is pleading for us because He paid the price for all of our sin and allowed us to be born again into a living hope.

May the families in America and all other nations realize that there is hope for them through Jesus Christ where they can become part of a royal bloodline with God as their Father and live in peace with one another. May we become ambassadors of reconciliation.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Cor. 5:17-21)

2 Cor. 5:16 just came strongly to me. “Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh.” I sensed God telling me that we are regarding people according to the flesh instead of seeing them by the Spirit as a new creation in Christ.

I have personally been tormented by a “familiar spirit”, God revealed it to me while studying 1st Samual where Saul went to see the lady with the familiar spirit in Endor. A “Familiar Spirit” is demonic and has existed for a very long time. All the facts and details of lives past are “familiar” to this demonic spirit and he deceivably demonstrates them to us in various forms such as: 1. When a seer at a seance calls back someone from the dead (as in 1st Samual chapter 28), it is a demonic spirit that is present, and not the soul from the dead. 2. Haunted houses are said to hold the spirits of the souls had had a horrific experience happen whilst there. Again, these are familiar spirits that were invited in through various sins and remember the details of those past lives. 3. When someone can detail the life and secrets of someone who died centuries ago with a humanly impossible ccuracy of the facts, this is again a familiar spirit who has been present for countless centuries. Remember the big stir in the 1950’s when the book called “Bride of Audie Murphy” was all the rage, and people would have spiritual parties to call back the dead? They were inviting (unbeknownst to them) demonic spirits.
Note 1: thee references were off the top of my head, so please forgive the lack of detail.
Note 2: Once God revealed me why I was being tormented and what was doing it for the past ten years, I was able to cast out the familiar spirit in Jesus’ name and keep it out.
Note 3: This familiar spirit came in unbeknownst to me as a teenager through the act of fornication.
Note 4: This familiar spirit kept memories in the finest detail alive from the year 1979 of this person I had sinned with many years hence. Ergo, I had to live with two very fresh memories: those from 1979 and those of the present while I was suffering. The damage caused my marriage to fail, as I was very troubled and until God revealed it, did not know why.

I was so blessed in reading what had been revealed to Ras and also with what each of the other comments shared. I personally see the “breaking of generational curses” as one of the greatest needs in the body of Christ today… AND, it begins with me and my family line as well…there is alcohol, suicide, incest, negativity, and control issues to name just a few. I am quite certain that if the truth be known, there is not one family that does not need to be free of some generational curse…either one they are already aware of, or one that remains hidden but is actively destroying lives within their family line! 😦 I give praise to JESUS, for in and through Him, we have VICTORY over the demonic and we have AUTHORITY to CAST the demons out of self/others and also to BREAK the line of the generational curse! I used to believe that the person (i.e. one controled by drugs, alcohol) needed to agree with the breaking of the curse: however, I have seen it broken through the prayer of faith (someone in the family, or friends praying for that person).

The example that came to me through Scripture was Lot and his two daughters (Genesis 20: 30-38). The demonic spirit was released through incest and the result was the nation of the Moabites and Ammonites; great enemies of Israel and ones that Israel never conquered, and because of the family connection, Moses was never allowed to attack them (Deuteronomy 2: 9). I think there are often some “enemies” that many of us have never defeated in our own lives (through delievrance; forgiveness, etc) and because of it, we live way below what Jesus obtained for us through His life, death, and resurrection…His precious blood (John 10: 10). God IS able to make good what the enemy intends to use to destroy us and a great example of this is Ruth, great-grandmother of David and an ancestor of Jesus was from Moab!
Praise the Lord! 🙂 I join with all of you in taking a more active role in breaking curses that have infiltrated or remain as strongholds within my family and the body of Christ.

After writing my comment; I was reading my devotional and thought it was relevant to all of us as intercessors and to the topic that has been revbealed to Ras:

“You who make mention of the LORD, do NOT keep silent. (You) have made us kings and priests to our God. The sons of Aaron, the priests shall BLOW THE TRUMPETS; and these shall be to you as an ordinance forever throughout your generations. When you go to WAR in your land against the ENEMY WHO OPPRESSES YOU, then you shall sound an alarm with trumpets, and you WILL BE remembered before the LORD your God, and you WILL BE SAVED FROM YOUR ENEMIES. I did not say to the seed of Jacob, “Seek Me in vain.” Their VOICE WAS HEARD; and their PRAYER CAME UP to His holy dwelling place, to heaven. The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears ARE OPEN TO THEIR CRY. PRAY for one another. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Come Lord Jesus….fill me with more of YOU and less of me.” (Isa 62: 6; Rev, 5: 9, 10; Num 10: 8,9; Is. 45: 19; 2 Chron 30: 27; Ps 34:15; James 5: 16; Rev 22: 20; Ps 40: 17; John 3: 30).

Blessings and grace to all of you as we go ever forward in Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our Faith! 🙂

As I read what Judy wrote about most if not all families having generational curses, I thought about Romans 1:18-32. When we don’t acknowledge God or give Him thanks or keep Him in our knowledge, He gives us over to every evil thing. We say that we are a Christian nation, but there’s a problem when every family in America is plagued by generational curses. I think that part of the problem for many is that we go to church for an hour or two on Sunday but then come home and live a life totally apart from God and His Word. When the early church gave their lives to Jesus, it was a total change of life. Their lives were totally and completely changed. They no longer fit into the secular culture. They didn’t go “to church.” Their entire life was church.

I gave a woman a ride home one day. She told me that she felt fine at church but when she crossed a certain boundary that she came under attack. When I got to her house, she started telling me about all the evil in her neighborhood. God spoke to me and said, My church is needs to be in the neighborhoods. The enemy is more organized than My church.

We are in a war for the children and families of our nation and other nations. Please pray that God will give us direction on how to go in and possess the land and have the victory. Please pray that all of us will get serious about this. This is a real war. I believe we need to be as serious about this as our nation is about war. I pray that this prayer will continue until we see the purposes of God come forth – for light to shine in the darkness.
