Volcano Erupts Day Before We Arrive Philippines

Posted: February 22, 2011 in Philippines

Can you imagine how we felt Monday morning of this week, February 21, to learn of a massive volcano eruption in the Philippines?  Here we are, all five team members, ready to go and now a volcano eruption.  Quickly, I researched the details concerning this event and found the location to be southeast of Manila, far away from any of the places we will visit.

We need your prayers!

The Philippine Islands nation is quite often hit with great and destructive storms, floods, malaria and dengue fevers.  Right now, the island of Bohol is being hit with gangue fever and some of our sponsored children became very, very ill and had to be hospitalized.  But again, we will not be on Bohol for this trip but we have hundreds of our 500 sponsored children on that island.

Read below about the volcano and then please intercede over the next 17 days while we are away ministering to all our 25 pastors and spouses, plus a large group of our sponsored children.  We will be baptizing a large number of children while there.  It is an important trip.  So, please hold us all up before the Father.

MANILA, Feb 21 (Reuters) – Hundreds of people fled homes and farms in central Philippines on Monday after a volcano spewed a 2-km (1.2-mile) high column of ash covering several villages, officials said.

Soldiers were patrolling a 4-km danger zone around the crater of Mount Bulusan, one of the most active volcanoes in the poor Southeast Asian nation.

Schools were closed and were being used as temporary shelters, Major Harold Cabunoc told reporters.

The army sent trucks to move around 2,000 people to safety.

“We’re also asking aircraft to avoid the volcano,” he said.

The Philippine Institute of Vulcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Mount Bulusan started spewing ash in November 2010 but the activity had died down just before the end of 2010. (Reporting by Manny Mogato; Editing by John Mair and Sanjeev Miglani)

Mt.Bulusan blew up a 2-kilometer ash cloud on Monday morning according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Renato Solidum, PHIVOLCS director says the explosion was due to steam build-up and the ash cloud is headed southwest towards Irosin in the province of Sorsogon.

Solidum warns that aircraft should avoid the ash cloud as it could damage engines and that people in the vicinity of the volcano risk triggering respiratory problems.

PHIVOLCS is currently as Alert level 1 where people are recommended to stay out of the 4-kilometer danger zone.

Mount Bulusan is located on the island of Luzon in Sorsogon province in the Bicol region. It is 250-kilometers southeast of the Philippine capital of Manila.

  1. Beverly Hill says:

    I pray all of Psalm 91 for Ras, Bev, Kathy, Susan, and Lucia, especially verses 4-6;
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust (take refuge): his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
We will be praying each day for you all.
